Help Your Kids Earn an A+ In Oral Health This Semester
July 18, 2024
Back to school season is right around the corner, and now is the perfect time to take control of your child’s oral health. Protecting those tiny teeth isn’t just a cosmetic issue, it affects everything from their self-esteem to their well-being to even their academic performance.
Here’s why scheduling your child’s dental exam right now will help start the school year right and give their smile an A+!
The Oral Health / Academic Performance Connection
While it may not seem obvious that your oral health can affect your academic performance, studies have shown that it can. In fact, according to the American Journal of Public Health, children in elementary school miss an average of six days of school per year, and an average of 2.1 of those days are due to dental issues. Worse yet, children who missed valuable instructional time due to tooth woes had lower grade point averages (GPAs) and their parents missed an average of 2.5 days of work to address these problems.
How to Prevent Oral Health Problems at Home
The key to reducing absences and classroom distractions due to oral health problems is to practice proper hygiene techniques at home. Encourage your children to brush their teeth twice a day, as well as to floss at least once a day. Furthermore, be sure to attend their semi-annual dental exams. These can help keep their teeth clean and healthy and address any potential dental disasters from worsening before they turn into a lost day of school.
Act Now
With just a few weeks before kids everywhere head back to campus, now is the perfect time to schedule their oral health exams. Their teeth will be clean and sparkly for those class photos, and should your dentist find any issues such as cavities, impacted wisdom teeth, or gum disease, they can be treated before the summer ends without requiring any lost instructional time.
This semester, help set your children up for academic success by scheduling their semi-annual dental exam before the school year begins!
