What are Tooth-Colored Fillings?

a person with a cavity on a tooth

Tooth-colored fillings are made from the same material that our team uses for dental bonding, called composite resin. This putty-like, biocompatible resin comes in a variety of different shades that can be combined to create a look that’s virtually indistinguishable from your natural tooth. As a result, these fillings flawlessly blend in with the rest of your smile, all while sealing off the vulnerable inner structure of the tooth to prevent an infection from developing.

The Process of Getting a Tooth-Colored Filling

Tooth-colored fillings in Somerville can typically be placed within a single visit to Somerset Dental Arts. First, Dr. Digrazia will clear away all decayed structure of the affected tooth, making sure no harmful oral bacteria become caught underneath the filling. She will then prepare the tooth by removing a very small amount of enamel and color match the shade of composite resin to your dental structure. Finally, Dr. Digrazia will gently place the putty onto the affected tooth to seal out harmful oral bacteria and rebuild its structure.

Using a special light, our team will harden the resin and check your bite to make sure it’s even. We may have to make some small adjustments along the way. Finally, we’ll let you take a look at the results using a handheld mirror. In most cases, our patients can’t even tell what tooth we treated!

The Benefits of Tooth-Colored Fillings

before and after getting a cavity filling

Cavities used to be treated with a metal compound called amalgam. Not only was this material not biocompatible, but it also led to increased dental sensitivity as well as the need for greater alteration of your dental structure in order to be seated within the tooth. Tooth-colored fillings are biocompatible and natural-looking, allowing them to offer a number of benefits, including:

  • A tight seal with your tooth’s existing enamel, preventing the material from expanding and contracting, causing dental sensitivity.
  • A natural-looking result that allows you to smile with greater confidence.
  • Durable and long-lasting results of between seven and 10 years.
  • Minimal alteration of your natural dental structure for preparation.
  • Cost-effective treatment.
